Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults)
The Cambridge Diploma is the most prestigious and widely recognised British qualification in TEFL. It is intended for candidates who have substantial experience of teaching EFL either in the UK or abroad. Entry candidates are normally expected to be graduates or to have qualified teacher status. Some basic EFL training, for example the CELTA or its equivalent, is considered essential. As a rough guide, two years broad and full-time experience of teaching adult classes is the minimum prerequisite in terms of teaching experience.
The Delta Modules
From October 2008, Delta became available as three separate Modules. Candidates may take one, two or all three of them and a separate certificate will be issued for each.
Module One: Understanding Language Skills for Teaching
This module looks at the theories behind how people learn languages and how they are taught.
Assessment: via a written examination.
Module Two: Developing Professional Practice
This module looks at the theory and practice of teaching and the different ways that environment, society and culture affect the way that it works.
Assessment: via a portfolio of coursework, including observed lessons, background written assignments, and one externally-assessed lesson.
Module Three: Extending practice and English language teaching specialisation
Assessment: via an extended written assignment.
